"Share" code?

RE: Photo - vadafade - 03-30-2014

Ah, so sorry you're having trouble posting images! That can be really frustrating. First, try deleting the space after the first bracket in the IMG tags. Second, you need to have the direct link to the image URL, not the lightbox/presentation page on Flickr (or Photobox or whatever hosting service you use). BBCode IMG tags only work with URLs that go directly to an image.

For instance, here's the lightbox page of one of my photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/vadafade/9635308240/

But here's a direct URL of the image: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2812/9635308240_415d2a9c17_c.jpg

IMG tags will only work with the second link, the direct URL of the image.

It looks like you have sharing disabled on your Flickr photos, which a lot of people do, so no worries there; but with those restrictions, the only way you can share your photos on a forum is by simply linking to them, as you did. If you want to be able to embed the image in a post, the photo's settings need to allow some kind of public access. From that point, you can click the "share" icon, which looks like a rectangle with an arrow popping out of the top right corner, and then click the little pushpin icon (which will auto-generate BBCode appropriate for forum sharing), select your desired image size, and copy the line of code that appears. Then, you can paste that into the body of your post, and your image will appear embedded.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for trying to help, vadafade -- appreciated! Heart
I've seen those "farm static" links but didn't know where they came from. How do you get this direct link? I've clicked all over my Flickr page & can't find one.
And what's the difference between the pushpin 'share' thing and the one beside it?
Oh, and by the way, I changed some permissions and it didn't 'take'. Next time I looked at it, it still had the same setting, unchanged.
I looked under 'help' & see a lot of angry comments from other users...!
Sorry about dumb newbie questions, & thanks again!

Nevermind, I think I found it. Thank you, Google! Tongue
Holy rigmarole, Batman!!!!

RE: Photo - vadafade - 03-30-2014

No problem at all -- happy to help!

The difference between the pushpin icon and the " < / > " icon is that the latter generates HTML code to embed the image in something like a webpage, while the pushpin generates BBCode. This forum and most other forums I've been on operate with BBCode, so HTML code for frames and embedding won't always work.

I got that direct link in kind of a roundabout way, by clicking the pushpin icon, copying the code it generated, and then deleting the URL and IMG tags surrounding the actual URL. So, the pushpin icon generated this string of text (without the space after the first brackets):

[ url=https://flic.kr/p/fFrts9][ img]https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2812/9635308240_415d2a9c17.jpg[/img][/url]

And to get the direct link to the image, I deleted the strikethrough text:

[ url=https://flic.kr/p/fFrts9][ img] https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2812/9635308240_415d2a9c17.jpg [/img][/url]

My point -- and I probably wasn't clear in this, so I apologize -- is that the pushpin link will auto-generate the appropriate BBCode for embedding an image in a forum post.

So it looks like all you have to do is figure out your permissions/access settings, and then you'll be good to go! Or, another alternative is that you can use a photo-hosting service other than Flickr. Whatever works! Ah, and I see as I'm writing this post that you figured it out. Nice!

RE: Photo - Alliecat - 03-30-2014

So you have to delete their "img" brackets and re-type your own?
Wowsers...!!!
I'll figure it out after a while... guess I won't be posting a gazillion photos!
Thanks again.

RE: Photo - Missy_Crane - 03-31-2014

Alliecat I don't know if this helps, but I use tinypic.com to upload all my pics. It's free and easy and quick, and you don't even need to sign up or anything.

Once you've uploaded a pic there they give you a handy copy-paste link for forums; you just paste it into your post and like magic, there's your piccy smile

No, you don't! I was just answering your question about how I got the direct URL of the image! smile To post a photo on the forum, literally all you have to do is copy and paste the text that Flickr auto-generates when you click the pushpin and select the desired size.

I'm going to step out of this thread because it seems that I am having major problems communicating. Good luck, Alliecat!

RE: Photo - Alliecat - 03-31-2014

Thanks, guys... I did understand you, vadafade. But it didn't work when I left their "img" brackets in on one try so I thought I had to retype it. Don't feel bad... I appreciate you taking time to help a newbie.
Missy_Crane, I'll have a look at tinypic.

RE: Photo - Alliecat - 04-23-2014

Testing... can I embed a video?

oooh, looks like it works...

RE: Photo - pixachii - 04-23-2014

OMG, I didn't even know it was possible to embed a video!!! : O Great find, Alliecat!

RE: Photo - Alliecat - 04-23-2014

smile I used the "embed" thing from Youtube which you just copy & paste, but I'm not sure how you do it with BB code. "[video]...[/video]" sounds too simple. (Such an adorable kitty. I figured if I was going to try it with a random video I'd at least use something cute!! )

RE: Photo - vadafade - 04-23-2014

Oh god, FINALLY. I've been wanting to embed videos for ages!

RE: Photo - Alliecat - 04-23-2014

Yay! I want to see them! Let's all make movies together!! grin
