I had believed since my elementary school days that Lusitania was a "sister ship" to Titanic. But a few moments of research in this miraculous Age of the Internet, inspired by your post, has corrected that misconception! Titanic was one of a group of three similar ocean liners, or "sister ships," operated by the White Star Line, the others being Britannic and Olympic. Britannic, like Lusitania, was sunk during the First World War, either by a mine or a torpedo (accounts and opinions differ). Lusitania was operated by the Cunard line and had two "sister ships," the Mauritania and the Aquitania (which some sources refer to as a "half-sister," whatever that means in steamship lingo). Both Mauritania and Aquitania managed to stay afloat and have long, successful careers. Thank you for your post which led to a clarification in my mind of a long-held misconception! It's really good, mostly for anime art with built-in tones, but can be used for anything.. It syncs onto a private cloud between pc/android/etc. It will also run extremely well on Linux under WINE.*looks at box of pencil crayons* ...Um, right. ...OK! Well, I knew you were kind of a computer whiz... I don't "get" digital art other than basic photoshop, but your creation is cool RE: PUDDLE 2019 photo / art contest - fishy - 05-04-2019 (05-04-2019, 12:27 PM)davidd Wrote:(05-03-2019, 02:35 PM)fishy Wrote: It was the RMS Olympic. There's actually a conspiracy theory that the Titanic's ruined sister-ship was purposely sunk in her place, with a changed nametag, as part of an insurance scheme that went terribly wrong (the rescue ships were supposed to be really close and no one should have died.) I don't typically believe conspiracy theories- although READING them is an occasional guilty pleasure!- but this one has some merit. I can't recall where I read it though. But a lot of details matched up, and I can believe 1.) that rich companies would cheat and 2.) that money-making schemes can go terribly, TERRIBLY wrong. Since you're sort of a history buff, it might interest you. I'm not sure if it's TRUE or not, mind you, but it's an interesting idea. That sounds quite fascinating! I have never heard of the Titanic insurance scam conspiracy. I shall have to look in to it. I can easily believe that something like that may have been considered. My understanding is that during the official inquest immediately following the sinking, pressure from the White Star Line and the shipbuilders convinced the investigators to disregard the survivor claims that the ship broke in half as it sank. The conclusion of the investigation was that the ship remained intact as it sank. When Ballard and Company found the wreck broken in two on the seafloor in the 1980s, it confirmed most of the eyewitness accounts that the ship broke in half during the sinking. So yes, there were actual conspiracies taking place surrounding the aftermath of the sinking, which makes the idea of a larger conspiracy seem more plausible. RE: PUDDLE 2019 photo / art contest - TrueFan - 05-05-2019 And in other news - still time to enter the contest! RE: PUDDLE 2019 photo / art contest - *NatTheCat* - 05-09-2019 That was a neat discussion about ships. . TrueFan, I apologize if I'm simply missing it, but what is the deadline for the photo/art contest? (Also, are there actually still tickets available?) I should at least try to enter the contest. . Someday I'd like to visit PUDDLE, as the idea sounds SUPER fun, but personal factors like confidence issues and hyper stressing hold me back. RE: PUDDLE 2019 photo / art contest - TrueFan - 05-10-2019 Alas, the deadline has come and gone. You can see all the entries in this flickr group: https://www.flickr.com/groups/3115517@N25/pool/ There are still tickets left for PUDDLE 2019! You can register here: https://www.puddlestyle.com/product/puddle-2019-registration/ This may not help, but many people who are underconfident, shy and/or anxious attend PUDDLE. We try our hardest to help people feel comfortable! It is especially helpful if you can come early and socialize in the lobby on Friday. before the actual event on Saturday. RE: PUDDLE 2019 photo / art contest - *NatTheCat* - 05-10-2019 I'm an idiot, I saw the entries on Flickr myself. *sigh* Well that's what I get for not looking into it sooner. Disadvantages of being a spur-of-the-moment person, I guess. Another random question, if you don't mind: do people sometimes share hotel rooms to split the cost? Sharing a room with a complete stranger might sound weird, but I was wondering if you heard of anyone that did. RE: PUDDLE 2019 photo / art contest - TrueFan - 05-10-2019 Yes, people absolutely do split hotel rooms, sometimes with people who are real life strangers RE: PUDDLE 2019 photo / art contest - *NatTheCat* - 06-01-2019 Hey, so when is the deadline typically set for the art contest? Just for future reference. Once I slow down on doll buying and help more dolls move out, I hope to make it to Puddle. :3 I'll need to work on my mental state so I don't freak out and hide in my hotel room the whole time. . RE: PUDDLE 2019 photo / art contest - TrueFan - 06-01-2019 It's normally in early May. You can see the 2019 winners here: https://www.puddlestyle.com/events/contest-galleries/2019-gallery/ If it helps there are truly many people at PUDDLE who feel the same way, but it has become a safe place for them. |
