A couple of late snapshots in poor light for this week's pic-a-week. I never like having to cut my glads but they get top-heavy and fall over.
Cute how Victoria looks so sweet & innocent in the first pic peeking through the flowers. Then she's back to authoritative pirate queen in the second.

That is an impressive change in "attitude" conveyed visually through posing and camera angles.

I find it interesting how the fixed-ex-pression figures can often appear to be ex-pressing different emotions depending on camera angle, body posing, setting, and lighting.

She really does transition from "cute" to "dominant" between these two images.

I'm often amused by how their ex-pressions seem to change. Sunsette in particular seems to have a variety.
Only got 3 chrysalises this year. Here are Abbi & Robyn with 2 of the hatchlings.

Since you mentioned that, I've been thinking and realized the overall insect count here has been much lower than e

ected. We had perfect "bug weather," adequate rain with stretches of sun -- which usually results in all manner of gnats and moths. Normally this time of year I am hearing the grasshoppers slowing down as they fly, but this year I've only seen one grasshopper all summer, and only one butterfly. A few gnats and moths early in the summer.

Fewer birds than usual. Normally I see nighthawks all summer in the sky at dusk when the gnats emerge, but very few nighthawks.

Is this a localized phenomenon, I wonder, or is this a sign of the "crash" in global insect populations that I've read about?

Yes the numbers fluctuate and I don't hear how many the butterfly-gardening lady gets on average, but, maybe 30some? or more... this year she had 15, of which I got 3. Her milkweed was noticeably un-chewed. I haven't heard how the population overall is doing yet; there's usually an update now & then, and will be once the season's tagging info is in.
Insects & birds (especially birds) are down across the continent, I think sad

Some bird populations are tanking. If you poison their food with pesticides and pave over their habitat and cut down all the trees, who's surprised?

My ascocentrum doesn't bloom every year; not sure how to coax it to do so. It's been ages since the last flowers, it seems. Here's Miki to show it off. I wish the flowers lasted -- they are so short-lived.
