Happy to report success with the dishwasher; problem solved.  Sometimes the School of Youtube is really excellent. Not technically rebuilding, just cleaning out the guts as far down as one can go without getting into the electrics on the underside.  Now it sounds like it's supposed to again!

(I don't trust Sunsette with large mechanical devices.  What if her crew absconds with a part?)

Ew no.  The girls like shiny things.  Everything that came out of the dishwasher was gross
