Yeah, she's holding it upside down to show the roots. The roots don't grow at the top. 

I guessed that part!! 

Wouldn't it be fun to grow a banyan tree, with aerial roots? Gotta live in a pretty warm climate for that. Like... where I used to live. 

(The despair I feel over not having done more to try to make staying in Hawaii feasible is settling deeper in to my soul with every passing day.)
