I thought the point was, you are supposed to grow things over them. Trailing plants and stuff. That’s what I would do if I had one.

Yes, I've read that, and seen pictures of pergolas serving as a trellis for climbing vines. Unfortunately, the climate here is too harsh for climbing vines to survive.
