The swampy backdrop is coming across as appropriately swampy.
To get a bit more light on the faces in similar lighting set-ups, I use a hand-held flashlight and diffuse the beam with tissue paper. (No, not wrapping paper grade tissue paper; more like, Kleenex facial tissue.
But green colored wrapping tissue might work really well for this. )
