Assembling the solar projector for Wednesday's eclipse. It was a partial here, only 26%, but still cool to see.

A couple of late snapshots in poor light for this week's pic-a-week. I never like having to cut my glads but they get top-heavy and fall over.
Cute how Victoria looks so sweet & innocent in the first pic peeking through the flowers. Then she's back to authoritative pirate queen in the second.

That is an impressive change in "attitude" conveyed visually through posing and camera angles.

I find it interesting how the fixed-ex-pression figures can often appear to be ex-pressing different emotions depending on camera angle, body posing, setting, and lighting.

She really does transition from "cute" to "dominant" between these two images.

I'm often amused by how their ex-pressions seem to change.  Sunsette in particular seems to have a variety.
Only got 3 chrysalises this year.  Here are Abbi & Robyn with 2 of the hatchlings.

Only three. How does that compare to a typical year? Do the numbers tend to fluctuate?

Since you mentioned that, I've been thinking and realized the overall insect count here has been much lower than expected. We had perfect "bug weather," adequate rain with stretches of sun -- which usually results in all manner of gnats and moths. Normally this time of year I am hearing the grasshoppers slowing down as they fly, but this year I've only seen one grasshopper all summer, and only one butterfly. A few gnats and moths early in the summer.

Fewer birds than usual. Normally I see nighthawks all summer in the sky at dusk when the gnats emerge, but very few nighthawks.

Is this a localized phenomenon, I wonder, or is this a sign of the "crash" in global insect populations that I've read about?
