Now that I look at the photo sizes, some of them were taken with the pocket Pentax Optio. The longer-sided ones are from the new camera.

The "300 page programming manual" is one of the downsides. :-( What kind of camera are you using?

It's a Pentax Kx. Google tells me there are other people having focus problems. Some misalignment of the sensor can cause it to back- or front-focus. Haven't had time to do test shots with it yet. Not that I want to venture into "Debug Mode" to fix it.
Yeah, I think something with a 300-page manual ought to at least also play music while I photograph, and make me tea when I get back. I don't even know where the manual for my beloved K1000 is. You don't *need* it. It was like 8 pages, I think. SIIGGGGHHHHH..... .... But I do take too many doll pictures for film... or at least, maybe if I was shooting film I'd take many fewer, because they'd be right the first time!!
