I wonder where the sanderlings came from. I say goodbye to them in late summer, kind of sad to see them passing through. I wonder if any of those have been on beaches near here.

I probably would miss A Doll A Day. And I would feel like I flaked out.

According to this animated map, yes, the sanderlings here could easily have come from there, and vice versa:

I will indeed have to take your word for it, as the map is completely borked on my screen.  Heck, with our internet I can't even send a video or watch Youtube without pauses sometimes.  There's a Motus tracking station on at least one lighthouse here, if I recall.

Didn't you mention wanting to (re?) learn ukulele?  You could go to the beach and sing " 'Ulili E" to the birds

Oh, that's pretty neat about the bird tracking station! You know a lot about your area of the coastline: the history, the geography, and what's going on where!

Ukulele... errr... thanks for the reminder. There's one sitting in the corner in a bag covered with dust, I think. I'll go look for it... later. As for what to sing, my style is more Stan & Ollie:

Well, I have been here 29 years.  But as far as what's going on, I often think I'm pretty out of touch 
I did not know people have put Motus tags on MONARCH BUTTERFLIES!! and DRAGONFLIES!!!  Guess I'll have to get on the newer laptop to find out more though, cos the site doesn't work on this one.

The video is blocked in Canada by copyright restrictions.  Again, I'll take your word for it.

They look like really fun little figures -- also good travel dolls.  Are they getting the "big guns" ready for a photo binge?

You could write a book: Thirty Years an Islander. Although people would certainly ask, how could you have been an island resident since before you were born? 

How can an electronic tracker be attached to insects? What powers it? How could it have any range at all? What types of intense invisible EF rays are being beamed out to broadcast and pick up the signals? Is nobody safe from having their every move tracked and recorded, not even insects and birds?

There was a time when this photo would have been unacceptable to me because I neglected to tighten up the gap at the waist where the upper torso connects to the legs. It was an oversight, and I am at present too lazy to set up another shot. I shall try to pay more attention to such details. I have fallen out of practice when it comes to photographing Pinky Street figures.

I did once think about writing something, because i was an avid journaler in my first years here. But I decided I wouldn't want to be bothered rehashing some things. There are other things I'd much rather write.

Well, I found this: https://www.lotek.com/wp-content/uploads...-Sheet.pdf ... and they stuck it on a bee, but I haven't found any pix of Monarchs. The Motus site is a bit cumbersome with a lot of clicking to get around the data. But wow, after all those years of tagging Monarchs, now I think how fun it would be to do THIS with them. I could register a project with Motus. But I also couldn't find prices for the tags...!

I wouldn't have noticed about the Pinky pic if you hadn't mentioned, and if you looked over at Dal House, you'd have seen that with the smaller photos on there + trying to see it on a phone screen, I thought she was wearing a shirt. Duh.... Anyway, I still don't think it looks that bad.

I looked, and ended up reading a bit about the MOTUS system, but I could not find prices for the tags, either. I found links to sites that offer tags for birds and mammals, but I didn't find any insect-size tags.

I found approximate prices for setting up a MOTUS tracking station: anywhere from several hundred dollars to about five-thousand dollars if you choose to install a tower and larger tracking dishes. I imagine a reasonably robust Internet connection would be required as well, but I did not continue my research.

Supposedly lower-powered transponders can be picked up two miles from a tracking station, while those with higher output can be detected at a range up to 12 miles.

Doll-sized Jar

Only five days in, and I'm already posting pictures of Not-Really-A-Doll.

This little jar, or bottle, is an example of an "impulse buy," one of those "that looks cool" rather than "that's something I have a use for" moments of online idiocy. This miniature "rustic canteen" bottle was made by Hot Toys and was included in the "Fennec Shand" and "Cobb Vanth" Star Wars universe action figure releases.

I purchased the jar, or bottle, whatever it is, loose from an online seller, just because I liked the appearance.

I really wanna stop making nonsensical impulse purchases like this.

I read that there is no charge to join the Motus program to host a station. As for setting up your own projects and buying tags, which you can also do, yeah, no prices.
I’ll put it on the “maybe someday in another place” list.

It is a cute little bottle and would contribute to your story settings; at least it doesn’t have mucus in it. 


Edit: just happened to be going to shoot a pic of the lighthouse for the paper, and hadn't really taken note of where the Motus thingy was up there, but, here it is. It was far too cold to take Sofia back out of the bag to put her in the photo and make it marginally relevant to my Flickr dolly page!
Anyway, I guess this is all you need to host a station.

It was So Bleepin Cold that I never even noticed the tub. Perhaps it is. As to the internet connection, the page is, like the rest of the site, rather dry.

Well, insect migration study is very much a Thing. I didn't even know some dragonflies do until recently. It would've been fun to put a tag on the gorgeous green darner I had in the garden a couple of summers ago. It looked freshly hatched and was quite spectacular. I'd love to know where it ended up.

So "Swallowtail" (or SWtail) in your Flickr descriptions referred to the MOTUS tracking site, and not necessarily to Sofia being named Sofia Swallowtail.

The tub might also contain a battery to power the receiver.

At close distances and with a plain background, the focal length depth compression differences among the various focal lengths are not appreciable. There is a slightly apparent reduction in focus depth-of-field, even at f/11, at the longer focal length.

I was not using a tripod. so the eksperiment is not as entirely objective as it could have been. Next time, maybe.
